Docker need not be introduced. It is almost synonymous with Linux container technology. Moby is an open source project of Docker, and is also the upstream of Docker commercial versions (including Docker CE and Docker EE).

Podman is an open source container runtime project that can be used on most Linux platforms. Podman provides very similar functions to Docker. It does not need to run any daemon on the system, and it can also run without root privileges. Podman can manage and run any container and container image that meets the OCI (Open Container Initiative) specification. Podman provides a Docker-compatible command line to manage Docker images.

Docker is an open source application container engine, while LXD is a system-level container, similar to a virtual machine. It is an upgrade to LXC. It can run a complete operating system internally, and users can manage LXD like virtual machines. Multiple processes can run in the LXD container. LXD only supports Linux.

Kubernetes (K8S for short) is a new distributed architecture solution based on container technology. It is a container cluster management system open source by Google. It is a complete distributed system development and support platform, without any invasion to existing programming languages, programming frameworks and middleware. Kubernetes has complete cluster management capabilities, including multi-level security protection and access mechanisms, multi-tenant application support capabilities, transparent service registration and service discovery mechanisms, built-in intelligent load balancers, strong fault detection and self-healing capabilities, service rollover and online expansion capabilities, scalable automatic resource scheduling mechanisms, and multi-granularity resource quota management capabilities.
